Myths and Taboos

Taboo – “Taboo is a form of psycho-social control more potent than even the most rigid moral code.”  “A
taboo is a prohibition collectively shared by a society, with a force so strong that it is rarely questioned or
even discussed.  It just is.”  Anal Pleasure & Health a guide for men and women by Jack Morin, Ph.D.  p.16.

Myth – A myth is a collective belief or set of beliefs that are based on the ideology of a group rather than
on an analysis of facts.

I present these definitions because we have a lot of myths and taboos about human sexuality.  Many of
these myths and taboos act as blocks to healthy sexual expression either on a conscious or subconscious
level.

Part of what I do as a prostitute priestess is to break myths and taboos that I have found that block
spiritual and sexual growth.  I have found the following helpful in breaking myth and taboo:

Becoming aware of my belief system.

Examining my language.  When I find myself using generalizations or categorizations about groups of
people or behaviors, there is usually a myth or taboo at work.  It sets up a mentality of good vs. bad.

Questioning.  Is it true that …

There is a power in naming.  Naming and reclaiming terms goes a long way.  By using the term sacred slut
or prostitute priestess, I have reclaimed my rights as a sexually expressive human being.

There is a power in breaking taboo.  Through the process, one can empower oneself, become sexually
liberated, and broaden one’s horizons in the freedom of sexual expression.  Through the process of
breaking taboos, one can discover freedom in gender expression, gender identity, sexual orientation,
sadism, masochism, and many other areas.

There are several steps involved in breaking a taboo.  The steps that I find helpful are as follows:

Name the taboo.  Giving the taboo a name also gives it substance.  It ceases to be something vague and
ambiguous.

Research and learn factual information about the taboo.
Discuss the taboo and question the taboo with trusted friend(s) and/or lover(s).
Become familiar with the taboo and get to know the object of the taboo.  For example, if you have an anal
taboo, get to know your anus through touch and looking at your anus in a mirror.
Reclaim your right to have mastery over your own life.
Engage in an activity which will serve to break the taboo.

Exploring one’s whole body.  Look at your body in a full-length mirror.  Be aware of the messages you give
yourself as you explore your body.  If you find the messages are negative and you are putting yourself
down, consciously change the message.  Remember, we live in a sex negative, ageist society.  We also
have the influence of Hollywood’s idealized version of an airbrushed body beautiful concept of what beauty
is.  This is truly an illusion of beauty that we can never live up to.  I find it helps to focus on the things I like
about myself and use this to replace the negative messaging.  Become aware of what you feel when you
touch yourself in different areas.  I find it helps to be aware of both physical sensations and emotional
feelings.  Sometimes the physical sensation will feel good, but emotionally there is turmoil.

We tend to over simplify when we use the dichotomy of good and bad or right and wrong.  Just because
something is different, it does not imply that it is bad or wrong.
